Are We Really Resting?

We often hear that rest is of utmost importance. Rest is much like the long quiet moments of winter before nature comes alive and flowers blooms in spring – essential yet often overlooked. Do we truly understand the importance of rest in our own lives? Why do we resist hitting the pause button for a while? Let’s explore why and how we can make rest a priority for our mental well-being.

Reasons We Resist Rest

  • Compelled by Success

In today’s society, being busy is often seen as a badge of honour, a sign of productivity and success. We’re constantly bombarded with messages that equate busyness with achievement, leading us to believe that the more we do, the more successful we are. As a result, we overwork ourselves, striving to meet these unrealistic standards of success. This relentless pursuit of perfectionism and productivity leaves us feeling exhausted and burnt out, yet we continue to prioritise work over rest, convinced that our worth is tied to our ability to constantly be on the go.

  • Reluctant or Afraid to Rest

Rest can feel unsettling and even frightening for many of us. We’re used to being on the go, and the idea of slowing down or taking a break can be daunting. We fear that taking a break might lead to setbacks in our goals, rejection from peers or supervisors, and ultimately being perceived as incompetent or lazy. This fear of negative consequences can make the idea of resting uncomfortable and anxiety-inducing, driving us to push ourselves even when we desperately need to recharge.

  • Restless Mind

Our minds are constantly buzzing with thoughts and worries, even when our bodies are at rest. The digital age has amplified this restlessness, with constant notifications and distractions keeping our minds in overdrive. Our minds are like a never-ending stream of thoughts, constantly racing from one idea to the next. Despite our best efforts, we struggle to switch off our minds, even when we’re physically at rest. The barrage of worries, to-do lists, and unresolved issues keeps our minds in a state of perpetual motion, making it difficult to unwind and fully relax.

  • Lack of Understanding of Healthy Rest

Many of us equate rest solely with sleep, overlooking other important aspects of rest. We may not recognise the value of mental, emotional, and spiritual rest, leading to neglect of these areas. Without a clear understanding of what constitutes healthy rest, we may struggle to prioritise it in our lives.

How to Embrace Rest

  • Power of Pacing

The concept of pacing is extremely helpful in achieving our objectives while prioritising our mental and physical health. One of the key aspects of pacing is breaking down larger tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks. By dividing tasks into bite-sized portions, we can approach them with greater focus and clarity, leading to increased efficiency and productivity.

It is equally important to incorporate regular breaks into our work routine. Scheduled breaks allow us to step away from our tasks, recharge, and return with renewed energy and focus. Whether it’s a short walk, a brief meditation session, or simply a moment to stretch and relax, these intervals of rest are essential for maintaining optimal performance and preventing burnout.

Contrary to the belief that working longer hours equates to greater productivity, research has shown that sustainable performance is achieved through a balance of work and rest. Recognising our limits, setting boundaries, and honour the importance of rest is key to achieving our goals without burning out.

  • Reframe Rest as Necessary for Progress

Resting isn’t a sign of weakness or laziness; it’s an essential part of the journey toward success. Rest is not merely a pause in our progress; it’s an integral component of it. When we allow ourselves to rest, we give our minds the opportunity to recharge and recalibrate, unlocking new levels of creativity, focus, and resilience. Rest is not a detour from our goals; it’s a strategic pit stop that enables us to navigate the twists and turns of our journey with greater ease and efficiency.

By reframing rest as progress, we shift our mindset from one of guilt and shame to one of empowerment and self-care. We recognize that taking care of ourselves is not selfish but rather a prerequisite for success. When we prioritize rest, we invest in our long-term well-being, laying the foundation for sustainable growth and achievement.

  • Practice Mindfulness

Incorporating mindfulness techniques into our daily routine is like adding a soothing balm to our hectic lives. These simple yet powerful practices offer a sanctuary of calm amidst the chaos, allowing us to reconnect with ourselves and find peace in the present moment. One of the most accessible mindfulness exercises is deep breathing. By focusing on our breath, we anchor ourselves in the present and soothe our racing minds. Taking slow, deep breaths activates the body’s relaxation response, calming our nervous system and reducing feelings of stress and anxiety.

Meditation and journalling are some other invaluable tools for cultivating mindfulness. Whether through guided meditation, visualisation, or gratitude journalling, these practices invite us to observe our thoughts without judgment and cultivate a sense of inner stillness.

With regular practice, our ability to maintain focus and emotional resilience is strengthened, empowering us to navigate life’s challenges with greater ease. Ultimately, mindfulness becomes not just a practice but a way of life, enriching every aspect of our existence and enhancing our overall sense of fullfillment and contentment.

  • Understand Different Forms of Rest As Per Your Need

Expanding our understanding of rest beyond sleep opens the door to a wealth of possibilities for nourishing our mind, body, and soul. Just as we have diverse tastes and preferences in food, our rest needs are equally varied and nuanced. By exploring the wide array of restorative activities available to us, we can discover what truly replenishes our energy and revitalises our spirit.

One form of rest (and my personal fav) that extends beyond sleep is spending time in nature. Immersing ourselves in the natural world allows us to disconnect from the demands of modern life and reconnect with the rhythms of the earth. Whether it’s taking a leisurely hike through the forest, lounging by the beach, or simply sitting beneath a tree, nature has a way of soothing our souls and restoring our sense of balance.

Engaging in hobbies, practicing yoga, connecting with loved ones, spending quality time with family and friends are some of many forms of rest and relaxation. Just as a balanced diet nourishes our bodies, a diverse rest repertoire nourishes our minds and souls. By prioritising activities that bring us joy and rejuvenation, we can cultivate a deeper sense of well-being and resilience in our daily lives.

Conclusion: Navigate Life’s Journey with Ease

In a world that glorifies busyness and achievement, rest often takes a backseat. However, by delving into the reasons behind our resistance to rest and adopting simple strategies to overcome these barriers, we have the opportunity to reclaim the lost art of rest and prioritise our mental well-being.

So, let’s embrace the pause, recharge our batteries, and rediscover the transformative power of rest in our lives. By honouring our need for rest and prioritising our mental well-being, we can cultivate a deeper sense of peace, balance, and fulfilllment in our daily lives. Ultimately, it’s not about how much we do but how well we take care of ourselves along the way.

After sleeping for more than 8 hours, I woke up feeling tired and longing for more rest. It was then that I realised sleep isn’t synonymous with rest; True rest is essential and deserves utmost priority.
