What’s your Dosha?

According to Ayurvedic principles, there are 5 elements that make up the whole universe – air, ether, fire, water and earth. Doshas can be described as combinations of these elements that flow through our body and energise us. 

When the doshas are in balance, we function effectively. However, if any or all of the doshas fall out of balance, diseases and illnesses can occur.

Vata Dosha ‘Air and Ether’

Vata is the energy of all movement. Vata is responsible for functions such as breathing and circulation in our bodies. 

Vata qualities are cold, dry, mobile, subtly, light, rough and astringent.  

Generally people with a dominant Vata constitution are quick witted, energetic and humorous.

Pitta Dosha ‘Fire and Water‘

Pitta is the energy that governs transformation. Pita is mainly responsible for the function of digestion in our bodies.

Pita has qualities such as hot, light, sharp, oily and pungent. 

Generally people with a dominant Pita constitution are passionate, fiery and hot headed.

Kapha Dosha ‘Water and Earth’

Kapha is the energy of structure and sustenance. Kapha is responsible for the strength and immunity of our bodies.

Kapha qualities are heavy, moist, slow, liquid, soft, sticky and salty.

Generally people with a dominant Kapha constitution are calm, grounded and patient. 

Each one of us is made up of these energies, or doshas in our body. Tridosha defines the three fundamental energies that govern the functions of our bodies. Distinct genetic blocks that make any individual different from another are attributed to these doshas. 

Getting to know the three doshas further and their qualities pertaining to yourself will allow you to recognise their presence and learn how to keep them in balance.
